I agree and am totally pissed, that i bought this product, I wish i had not gone with a third rate company now, and gone with something available from EYETV.

8 months is absolutely ridiculous and I hope that it shows others the "support" their company offers before buying something that with an os upgrade becomes unusable.
(EYETV took like 3 weeks to update!!!)

Olly,

Try to run the Install Disk again, but instead of doing the Install, open Startup Disk and see if the drive w/ Leopard is there, then select it. It may just be the new OS is not mounted properly, thus producing the Folder w/ the question mark at startup.

Hey, get this.... macbook, with a broken optical drive, a G5 (powerPC) with working drive. empty external usb drive.
i have a copy of leopard bought legit. Leopard installed properly on g5 then tried to install via target disk mode in both directions on the macbook and no luck. eventually went and deleted evrything in the hope that a new install might work better but it said there maybe a problem with my hd in macbook so bought a new replacement HD!!

found ur site and did as u instructed but still no luck. it seems that after the apple symbol and chime and the spinning icon it turns into a "no-entry" sign. so even after leaving it for ages nothing.

so now i have an expensive white piece of plastic which turns on to show me a question mark folder!! a dvd with no where to go, and an almost empty, bar the copy of leopard external hd. .... bargain.

I am able to restore the image file (mine is a .iso) to a partition on my external. It is usb, but tiger recognizes it as a bootable volume. However, when I try to boot into the backed up install dvd image, I just get the apple loading screen thing forever. I have left it for an hour and nothing happens. Any ideas?

thank you, thank you! This simple, straightforward tip has just saved me a great deal of time. All I needed to do was make some images smaller to post in an ad on Craigslist and I kept finding sites that wanted to go into all the math and science behind image size. Thank you for being direct and to the point!

Out of curiosity, do you know anything about photographing food? That is my next challenge....

to solve the problem of "Set audio output buffer size failed, status = 1852797029" open up "Audio MIDI setup" in your /Applications/Utilities folder, and change the audio output from 2ch-24bit to 2ch-16bit. Also, make sure the format is 44100Hz.

easy as pie. I think you'll have to re-do this after every reboot, unfortunately.

I assume given the timing that you're trying to install the DMG file that Apple just published for Leopard. I had the same problem, and the solution was to Eject the disk image before trying to burn it or restore it to a disk partition, otherwise it is "busy" when you try to Restore it to a partition in Disk Utility to get the thing install-able.

Hi, Ive followed all your instructions fine but when I click on the "install Mac OS X" a window pops up telling me I cant install from this drive (my FW external HD)...?

What I noticed is that your screen grab shows a logo of a DVD on your installer window and mine shows and external HD logo. How did you get your Mac to recognize your external HD as a DVD?

Thanks

You can also use Cmd-Option-F to get to the Google Search Box. If you want to change it, it's under the Edit>Find menu. It's called, "Google Search…" (ellipses are typed with Cmd-; BTW)

I have been serching the web for an explanation on how to export a plain text document to a pc user who uses microsoft word. I have been to the apple store twice to have them show me - get home - try to e-mail a copy of my student report to a school using a pc (from my macbook pro) Pages program and I continually get the response "I can't open your report." I think my co-workers must think I am an idiot.

Can you write out the steps for me from the very beginning - ex. Pages - File - New - Blank document - I write my text - and help me out from there. I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you. I am new to Mac and have always used pc. I bought the mac recently because i love the graphics, photo quality, ext. Thank you

Jerry, no the blocks (also called artifacts) will not disappear. Re export the clip 640x480, but turn up the quality. If the source footage you used has the same kind of artifacts, I don't know of a way to clean them up. What you are speaking about is caused by the compression of the video. If the video is compressed too much, colors blend together, creating the blocks you see.

I agree with Steve. There are tons of people out there that would NEVER know about this, along with plenty of other basics the rest of us take for granted.

In Tiger, you had to hit Command Return to select the top hit in Spotlight. It's definitely more useful in Leopard.

Sure Mike, this is a basic tip. Sometimes I just like to write about the actions I take for granted. You'd be surprised how many people I've tutored in their homes don't know about Spotlight. I'll post something more advanced soon.

I did everything as stated. However when I restore the partitioned drive, it gives me a "restore failure - error 6 occurred while copying. (Device not configured)." I am not sure what else to do. Someone please help. Thanks

...came across this post while searching for a decent brainwave solution for the Mac... I think it is somewhat frustrating having to use a command line tool on OS X for this... currently I am running NeuroProgrammer in a virtual Windoze machine and hope the guys over there did not lie when they promised they were working on a native Mac version of NP2...

Cheers

steveblue,

Really neat idea. In System Preferences, just add this to your login items, so you don't have to click on anything at all. I dunno if this still works in Leopard (still faithfully running Tiger), although I don't see any reason for Apple getting rid of this great idea

I too get the resource busy problem...

SOLUTION!:

If you get the "image needs to be scanned" error, double click .dmg to mount it.

But then you will notice if you have the .dmg selected as source it will give the resouce busy error!

When you mount the DMG, the mounted disk will show just under the DMG in the list, but as you may have noticed it doesnt let you drag this to the source box?

BUT it if you Ctrl click/right click on it and choose set as source, it works!

Somebody should put their MacBook Pro 1st generation computer on their lap and burn the hell out of it. Then sue Apple for building such a defective motherboard by adding too much defective bonding compound around the CPU and heatsink! They won't own up to it. Maybe bringing a MacDonald's spill-burning-coffee-on-your-lap-type suit would bring relief from the stupid workarounds, grilled MacBooks, and time-consumed writing about this. Maybe you'll get a voucher for a new MacBook Pro for your troubles (a $1,000 instead of the $100 iPhone rebate?!)? I'm a Mac user, but this shouldn't be happening to my friends and colleagues (i.e. the stonewalling).

I forgot to mention - if you aren't going to give out the user password, the account will need to login automatically on bootup. And if someone happens to log off (I almost never see this), they can just restart the machine to get back in again. You can also set your Macs to auto shutdown every night at a certain time (4am might be good) to ensure a fresh pristine environment on the next boot. And I encourage folks to use a flash drive or network space to save their files so they don't lose any of their work (never expect important work to remain on a public lab machine). With this setup, files are gone after 2 reboots.

In the Mac labs that I manage at West Virginia University, I don't use parental controls. Instead, I lock the dock with Onyx - a free utility made by the same folks that make Deeper (Titanium Software). We just have the machines logging in automatically with a non privileged account so they can't delete apps, etc. I wrote a very simple shell script to automatically replace the home directory of the default user on every shutdown (or restart). This way, the next time the user turns on a machine to use it, a perfect original copy of the default user's home directory is restored - background settings, screen saver, default web page, etc are all back to pristine defaults. This is a nice setup, because the users can mess it up all they want and then you just reboot the machine and you're back to normal. The script also saves files saved in the account to a folder for one subsequent boot so no one loses any files that they may have saved locally.

Here is the script that runs on every shutdown (or restart):

#!/bin/sh
rm -rf /Users/user.bak
mv /Users/user Users/user/bak
tar -C /Users -xf /Users/user.tar

This script is for a default user named "user." You have to make a "user.tar" file of your pristine directory there in order this to work (tar cfp /Users/user.tar /Users/user). Be sure permissions are chmod 700 and owned by root for this script. Lastly, create a shutdown script in your /Library/StartupItems folder which will activate the above script on Shutdown, be sure permissions are correct for this and you're done!

If you're not comfortable with the Unix command line and shell scripting, alternatively you can buy a commercial product that does the same thing as the scripts (and much more): It is called Deep Freeze - get it here:

http://www.faronics.com/html/DFMac.asp

I'm not sure why folks above are concerned about users changing the password. They have to know the current password before they can change it right? So it shouldn't be a problem - just don't tell anyone the default user password. We have an admin account on our machines that we give to certain individuals who need to be able to install software, etc. Mike Bombich's Netrestore is awesome for managing Mac labs though he needs to update it for Leopard (still works with Leopard but with some limitations). And with Apple Remote Desktop you can really have nice control of your Mac labs!

Hope this helps some of my fellow Macintosh Lab managers out there!

Blessings,

Steve

Billy,

Your idea will work. But I would turn it around, clone Tiger to the external and use that as a backup in case the Leopard Install on the Internal isn't to your liking. Then you can still use both OS.

Why do you want to do this?

Further to Javiers comment

"I suddenly started wondering whether more useful than having the install disk on an external drive would be having a bootable version of Leopard on an external drive?"

I made a disk image as you said, and then had the same idea as Javier. Is it possible to install Leopard from the .dmg onto a partition on a FireWire external HD, and run it as an additional system to Tiger (which would be on internal HD) by booting between OS's. Could I put Leopard onto a 50G partition on my external HD, and add and delete programs, as I can in Tiger on my internal HD? In other words, use it like a 2nd internal HD with a different OS? By this I don't mean a "bootable clone" (as in SuperDuper), as I don't beleive you can add data to the clone? Hope this makes sense.

Trying to instal Leopard from internal partitions.
I backed up my OS X 10.4.11 files on an external HDD. I also copied the Leopard .dmg file there, too. I set the disk startup to my Tiger 10.4 DVD. Restarted. Used the Tiger DVD to access Disk Utility. I partitioned my internal HDD into 2 volumes. One was 10GB and the other was the remainder of my internal HDD space. In preferences, I made sure the 10GB volume was GUID. I highlighted this volume in the left panel and clicked RESTORE. I mounted the Leopard.dmg. I dragged it to "SOURCE" and then I attempted to drag the 10GB drive to the "destination" but wasn't able. Disk utility wouldn't let me drag any of the drives to "destination" for that matter. This of course wouldn't let me "restore" the 10GB drive as it was grayed out, or at least not clickable yet. I'm sort of in a catch 22 here. Any advice?

Steve,
We have the solution. You have to select "Try to limit access to adult websites automatically". Then select "Allow unrestricted access to websites" again. That solved the problem for us. It seems the default choice shown in the Parental Control control panel and the default behavior do not match. Making the choice made the change.

This widget is rather buggy. It shows all the movie times as over 2 hours. If a showtime is actually 1:24, the widget shows it as 2:24. This needs to be updated to fix things like that before I would recommend using it.

I've used sbagen on my older computers and I love it so much! I have a MacBook running Leopard and I get this error whenever I try to load a .sbg or run the DEMO.command:

"Set audio output buffer size failed, status = 1852797029"

Any ideas? It should be fine with Leopard and Intel Macs, right? UNIX is UNIX, right?

Kat,

Photoshop is more appropriate for this kind of Image Handling. If you change the resolution to 300dpi in Photoshop, it will automatically calculate the Image Size. You must sacrifice the image dimensions and make it a smaller image to get a higher DPI. It works on the same ratio. So if you are going from 72dpi to 300dpi, this is a 4.16X magnification in resolution. The image size would then need to be divided by this same amount. So, if the width of the image was 3,692 pixels, The new width would become 887.5 pixels. This will scale the image without distortion.

To scale from 72dpi to 300dpi without sacrificing image size uses a process called Vectorization. You must actually create new pixels where there were none before. This is a complex process. I do not know much about this...

Okay, how about the reverse ... what if I have a large image in 72 dpi. A site is requiring a smaller size (get how to do that now--thanks!) but at 300 dpi. Any ideas?

You can import to a Quicktime movie in a Quartz Composition using the Movie Loader Input Object using Quartz Composer in Leopard (I believe it was called something different in Tiger). You would then hook it into a Billboard object via the Image condition for viewing in the preview window. This is possibly the simplest Quartz Composition.

I know NOTHING about Core Animation, but I was wondering if there's any way to convert a brief quicktime video into a Quartz Composition. I'm guessing it's a NO.

Thanks.

Javier,

The advantage in having a Bootable Install is mainly for diagnostic and the obvious Install of OS X. It is fastest to install OS X over a Firewire 800 connection. Firewire 400 is faster than off the DVD. This is mainly for Macs with a broken Combo or Superdrive. Or perhaps you backed up the install disk to a DMG. This would mean you cannot burn it back to a standard DVD because of the 4.37GB restriction.

A Bootable OS could run alongside the Bootable Install on a properly partitioned Hard Drive. The advantage here would be the ability to continue work in Applications in the case of a Hard Drive failure in the Internal HD. Making Scheduled Backups with SuperDuper! is great for this purpose.

In addition to a very big thank you for this article,
2 things:

Firstly, I too was getting various combinations of errors (2 and 16)when trying to restore. I finally found that if I mounted the image by CTRL-clicking the icon and choosing "Mount It" from the bottom of the menu, I could then restore in Disk Utility without a problem.

Secondly, I suddenly started wondering whether more useful than having the install disk on an external drive would be having a bootable version of Leopard on an external drive? Is there something I'm missing here? What's the advantage of having a bootable install disk rather than a bootable OS?

Thanks in advance.

I Followed your directions worked perfectly except i get the error "To install Mac OS X, please use the application provided on the Mac OS X installation disc."

I also noticed a differnece in icons, in your disk utility you had the hard drive icon, mine i have the orange fire wire icon for external hard drives, i think that it wont let me boot b/c it's not configured to be a bootable hard drive

This worked for me--thanks. I tried also to restore my Leopard disk image file to a (dual layer) DVD, but my Tiger OS doesnt see it as a bootable volume, in particular Disk Utility does not regard it as a volume it can restore to (though I can burn the disk image onto the DVD from the Finder). Any idea how to do this?

I have the same error. An error (16) occurred while copying. (Resource busy)

I've read that ejecting the External HDD, and then re-mounting it would fix the error. But after a few dozen tries it seems it does not. More Googleing.

Same with me on a MBP, but on an old iBook (same OS of course), the as expected behavior occurs--I click update it does its thing and I can continue doing mine and even tell it not to restart immediately when it finishes. What gives I wonder?

Thank you for your assistance in this article.

I have created a .dmg file from the Install DVD (by choosing 'read/write' from the file-type menu). I have created partitions on my firewire drive, with all of the parameters you suggest in the article (GUID, 10GB, name="Mac OS X Install DVD").

PROBLEM: Upon restoring from the .dmg to the 'Install' partition, I am receiving error 16 ("Resource is busy.")

Attempted solution: Re-doing everything except enabling the extra options for creating the .dmg file (this time I used 'entire device').

PROBLEM: error (2): No such file or directory. Tried again, error (16): ("Resource is busy.")

Other notes: Each time, I could not drag the destination partition from the desktop into the restore 'Destination' field. I had to drag it from the list on the left column of Disk Utility.

Any solutions?

Thanks!
