GPS for iPhone and iPod Touch

May 9th, 2008 by steveblue

This guy has successfully engineered a GPS Module to interface with the iPhone and iPod Touch, bringing true GPS to the devices made by Apple, Inc. This should be an exciting project for anyone wanting to use their iPhone as a GPS device. Imagine the ability to cache Google Map’s directions and follow the route in real time. This functionality would fit in nicely with a car holder for the iPhone. The current GPS feature Apple released in January 2008 actually triangulates the positional data based on the relative position between the device and cell phone towers. GPS triangulates position using satellites in orbit, and is thus more accurate (around 3-6 meters). Seems like the project has moved into the final design phases, so a GPS solution for the iPhone should be on the market by next year hopefully!

Watch Online TV with Joost!

October 8th, 2007 by steveblue

Joost Logo

Joost, an Online TV Application, was just released last weekend. Joost has made agreements with major networks like MTV, CNN, Discovery Channel, WB, and CBS so they can provide over 15,000 shows and several channels with their online service.

Joost Interface

Joost is an application that I can download for free. Joost boasts an amazing interface that allows me to browse channels via a grid. I can search for a show I want to watch. There are chat rooms, so I can talk with others watching the same show. There is instant messaging support for gMail and Jabber. Joost supports multiple accounts, so different users can customize the interface to their liking. Oh, are there commercials? There are commercial breaks with only one commercial per break.

But there is no support for PowerPC Mac, sorry G4 and G5 owners. Why don’t you go complain at Joost.com and maybe future Beta versions will be Universal. I must have an Intel Mac and Broadband Internet Connection for Joost. Also, the first release of the Beta seemed kinda buggy, but I did just test it out on launch day. There will be improvements in the future, I’m sure. I managed to watch a few episodes of Babylon 5 just fine.

Download Joost from the Official website and start watching online TV today.

Feeling Moody? Listen to Tracks in iTunes Based on Your Mood…

September 21st, 2007 by steveblue

Moody is a great Application for finding music in my iTunes library to listen to. This Application works on an iPod as well…

Moody will play music in iTunes based on my mood

What does Moody do? Moody will play music based on the color I choose. The colors reflect certain moods I may be in.

Moody newbies may be turned off by the seemingly long time it takes to tag songs in iTunes. It is well worth the time it takes. I find it discomforting sorting through thousands of songs anymore to find what fits my mood just using iTunes. Moody really is a simple interface for listening to music, especially for artists who fully understand the connections between color and mood.

I can download Moody from Crayon Room’s website.

Crayon Room provides a Quick Tour of Moody via Streaming Quicktime Video that shows me how to QuickTag songs in iTunes.

New iPod Mimics the iPhone

September 5th, 2007 by steveblue

Apple followed through again this year, with another release of the popular iPod Line this Wednesday at a press event hosted at the Apple Inc. Campus in Cupertino, Ca.

iPod Touch

Is the iPod Touch a Hero?

Apple Inc. released a stripped down, yet enhanced version of the iPhone today called the iPod Touch. This is the first iPod to be able to connect to WiFi networks. So far, it seems the only differences between it and an iPhone is the absence of the phone element and the availability of a 16GB Hard Drive. The 8GB iPod Touch can hold up to 1,750 songs, 10,000 photos, or 10 hours of video, while the 16GB version holds 3,500 songs, 20,000 photos, or 20 hours of video. The iPhone Touch is only available in the color black and features a 3.5-inch multi-touch display. Battery life for music playing can last up to 22 hours, while video playback will only last 5 hours.

Will the iPod Touch feature the same Apps that the iPhone has been endowed with? You can bet on it. This means a whole new level of gaming and organization that previous iPods lacked. WiFi doesn’t just come in handy for viewing websites with Safari, but I can make iTunes Store purchases over wireless networks as well. The iPod Touch will not be available at launch, but later in September.

How to Rip DVDs for Video iPod or PSP

November 5th, 2006 by steveblue

Instant Handbrake is a great application for ripping DVDs straight to an iPod or PSP. Maybe I don’t want to lug around a bunch of DVDs on a roadtrip. Or maybe I want to take a DVD and play it on my video iPod. Handbrake will take a DVD and make the title track an iPod compatible MPEG4 or H.264 Quicktime movie. It can even make PSP compatible movies. Handbrake can even read Video_TS and Audio_TS folders on a hard drive and output a video format.

Handbrake

I can download Instant Handbrake from here. Open the DMG file, drag the Application to my Applications folder to install.

A Brief Introduction to DVD Ripping

Ripping a DVD essentially means I am translating the language of a DVD to a language video players on my Mac can understand. DVDs have a basic structure. The video is stored in a folder called Video_TS. The audio is stored in a folder called Audio_TS. In the Video_TS folder, a DVD’s main content is divided into Title Tracks. Tracks can be the main feature or even extra content. Usually, Track 1 is the main feature of the DVD. If the DVD is of a TV show, look for the DVD Features with similar durations, about the length of the TV show.

How to Rip a DVD using Handbrake

Insert a DVD. DVD Player may automatically start. Quit DVD player, or whatever other application have set to automatically play DVDs.

Open Instant Handbrake.

Select DVD Drive from the first menu and make sure the DVD I wish to rip is selected.

Hit Continue. Instant Handbrake will now scan the DVD.

In the next menu, make sure the main feature is selected. Usually it is Track 1 or the track with the longest duration. If I am ripping a DVD of a TV show, select the Tracks that have the same tv length duration.

Save converted files to: automatically saves the output video to the Movies folder. I can change the location here.

Select the file format. Read below for instructions based on if the video will be viewed on an iPod, PSP, or computer monitor.

For Video iPods, I recommend File format: iPod 5G H.264 with the Picture format: Fullscreen. This will make a .MOV file with the aspect ratio 320 x 240 with a smaller filesize than MPEG4.

For a file that will looks nice on both iPod and computer screen, select iPod 5G MPEG4 and Picture format: Fullscreen. This file will be larger in filesize than H.264.

For PSP, select File format: PSP (MPEG4) and Picture format: Fullscreen.

Select the language in Preferred audio.

Select any subtitles if necessary in Preferred Subtitles.

Hit Convert.
