Customize My Icons

There is a built-in method for changing icons in OS X. I think it is rather cumbersome. I eventually got tired of opening every file, copy and pasting the icons. I want to change all of the icons on my computer in a faster and more encompassing way. So, I use Micon.

Micon is a fantastic drag and drop utility for changing icons. You can even change multiple folders and files at once by draging them into the well. It cannot change system icons, though. Micon is freeware.

I want a bit more power in changing my system icons. They are the icons I see all the time, right? Candybar is an excellent shareware application that uses the same basic drag and drop methods of Micon. Candybar allows you to change virtually any system icon on your Mac. You can even manipulate icons in the Dock. Candybar also saves the default icons, so you don’t need to be worried if you don’t like the new look. Fantastic application for anyone who wants to customize OS X icons.

Can’t find any icons? InterfaceLIFT is a great resource for finding OS X icons. I recommend browsing there and choosing one of the icon sets that contains an icon for practically every icon in OS X. This way, I can just switch over to a new style, without leaving behind any important icons. Some of the artists featured on InterfaceLIFT are really talented.
