Put Myself in Space

January 25th, 2007 by steveblue

Here is a Screen Saver I cooked up with Quartz Composer. If I have a Mac running Tiger and an iSight or webcam, I can put myself in outer space!

How the Screen Saver works: Dark colors are transparent, allowing space to show through. Bright colors will be opaque. So, turn off the lights and spotlight yourself somehow and you will be walking around in space in no time!

Download the Screen Saver here.

Double click the .zip archive to unzip the two files needed to run the screen saver: outerspace.qtz and hst15_night_sky2.mp4. Place these two files in the /Library/Screen Savers/ folder .

Open System Preferences and select Displays. Select 720×480 (stretched). Your screen resolution will shrink down to the size needed to display the video correctly. Now, click Show All and Select Desktop and Screen Saver. Click the Screen Saver tab. Select outerspace from the list of screen savers.

WriteRoom

I was just a child when I started typing on an Apple IIe at my local library and elementary school. I remember typing was so much simpler than the typical Microsoft Word interface now. Typing used to be a dark screen with bright text, which is easier on the eyes than looking at a white screen with black text.

Enter WriteRoom.

WriteRoom is the most distraction free word package out there

WriteRoom simplifies typing. “Distraction free typing” is Hog Bay Software’s motto. Open up WriteRoom and you will find a simple interface, ready for a journal entries, note taking, letter writing, even a novel. Why sit around and be distracted by hundreds of buttons surrounding your masterpiece of literature?

WriteRoom 2.0 is a significant improvement over the original. “WriteRoom 2.0 adds a live word count, rich text, multiple documents, and lets you fine-tune your writing environment… Use WriteRoom on its own for all your text editing needs, or let WriteRoom be your ticket to full-screen editing for text in any program.”, according to Hog Bay Software. Worth every penny of the $24.95 price tag.

Download WriteRoom from Hog Bay Software.
